“Emily the Strange” is a character created by the San Francisco-based artist group Cosmic Debris. Emily, a 13 years old fair-skinned girl with long black hair wearing a black dress, who lives with four black cats, was born as a character designed for stickers in the early 1990s.

An illustrated book of Emily the Strange was published in 2001. Its impact full story-line and hip lovely artwork were well received by many readers, and it became a big hit all over the world as a new cultural icon.

The spirit of Emily, who leads a unique lifestyle free from being bound to society, penetrated the

souls of many fans and continues to encourage readers today.

In Japan, the Japanese-translated version of the illustrated book “Emily the Strange” was published in 2003. It was followed by the publication of “Emily the Strange: the Lost Days” and collaborations with many apparel brands.

In this exhibition, original artworks as well as a number of comic manuscripts, drawings, and digital works will be exhibited for sale. Japan-only original goods will also be sold at the exhibition. This is the first exhibition in Japan to introduce the world of Emily the Strange, which has made a significant impact on pop culture, and the artworks of Cosmic Debris.
